Free imposter game generator: pick word categories, then play on one device or online. Every player gets a secret word from the packs you choose — no download.
Pick your word categories and start a game — Word Impostor sets up the round and hands every player a secret word from the packs you chose. Most players get the same word, the impostors get a closely related one, and everyone tries to spot who is faking it. No spreadsheets, no writing words on scraps of paper — choose your themes and play.
How the Game Generator Works
Instead of thinking up word pairs yourself, you pick a category and the game deals the words. Everyone except the impostors gets the same secret word from that category; the impostors get a different, related word and have to blend in with their clues.
Pick one or more categories — or leave it on a random mix — then choose how to play: pass one phone around the table, or create an online room and share the link. Your categories carry into the game, and when the round starts every player is dealt their word automatically.
Because the words are drawn from a category you picked, clues stay on-theme and the game feels tuned to your group — a food night, a movie night, or a classroom warm-up.
Choose From Curated Word Categories
Word Impostor ships with a growing set of themed categories, and many are free: Animal Kingdom, Food & Cuisine, Geography, Music, Sports, Science, Technology, Entertainment, Literature, Colors & Shades, and Famous People, alongside premium seasonal and specialty packs.
Each category is a curated set of related words chosen so clues create genuine doubt — close enough that a careless impostor blends in, distinct enough that a lazy clue gives them away.
Imposter Game Words by Category
Curious what the imposter game words look like? Each round the group shares one word while the impostor gets a close cousin — same category, different word. Here is a sample of real pairs from the free packs; every category holds dozens more, and a custom pack turns your own list into a word generator for your imposter game.
Food & Cuisine — Pizza / Lasagna, Coffee / Tea, Burger / Hot Dog
Want inside jokes, class vocabulary, or your friend group's own references? Create a custom word pack with your own words and it becomes selectable right alongside the built-in categories, in both online rooms and same-device play.
A custom pack is a word generator in the truest sense — your own words, dealt automatically, with no setup at the table.
You choose how to play. Play on this device runs the whole game on one phone passed around the table — instant, no link, best when everyone is in the same room. Play online with friends creates a room to share, so each person joins and gets their word privately on their own phone.
Whichever you pick, the categories you chose carry straight into the game — same device or online — so players are dealt on-theme words automatically.
You pick a word category and start a game. Word Impostor then deals the secret words: most players get the same word from that category, and the impostors get a different, related word. You never have to write or think up word pairs yourself.
Is it free?
Yes. Choosing categories and starting a game is free and runs in your browser on phones, tablets, and desktops. Many categories are free; some seasonal and specialty packs are premium.
What word categories can I choose from?
Free packs include Animal Kingdom, Food & Cuisine, Geography, Music, Sports, Science, Technology, Entertainment, Literature, Colors & Shades, and Famous People, plus premium seasonal and specialty packs. Select one, or mix several for more variety.
Can I use my own words?
Yes. Create a custom word pack with your own words and it appears alongside the built-in categories when you set up a game — so the generator deals your themes automatically.
Can I play on one device or online?
Both — you choose. Play on this device runs the game on a single phone passed around the table (instant, no link). Play online with friends creates a room you share so everyone joins from their own phone (3+ players). The categories you picked carry into either one.
How many players do I need?
Classic needs at least 3 players and works well up to about 10. With 6 or more, the game can add a second impostor to keep both sides under pressure.
Can the impostor get no word at all?
Yes. Enable the Mr. White role in the game settings and one player gets no word, so they must improvise clues from what everyone else says.
