Quick Spyfall FAQ

Can you play Spyfall online with friends?

Yes. Word Impostor lets your group play Spyfall online with shared rooms, built-in locations, and fast role setup.

How many players do you need for Spyfall?

Spyfall mode works best with 4 or more players so questioning, bluffing, and voting all have enough pressure.

What makes a good Spyfall question?

Good Spyfall questions test context without naming the location directly, such as asking what feels normal, unusual, or risky in that place.

2026-01-04 - Word Impostor Team

Spyfall is now part of Word Impostor. One player is the Spy with no location. Everyone else shares the same location plus a role tied to that place. Players ask questions, answer in character, and try to catch the Spy before the clock runs out.

If you already know Spyfall, you will feel right at home. If you do not, here is the quick version.

How a Spyfall Round Works

  1. A location is picked from the active pool.
  2. One (or more) players become the Spy. Spies get no location.
  3. Everyone else gets the location and a role.
  4. Players ask questions in a chain. The person who answers becomes the next asker.
  5. Anyone can start a vote before time ends. The timer pauses during voting.
  6. A unanimous vote (everyone except the accused) ends the game right away.
  7. If time hits zero, the game moves into a final accusation round.

Roles Keep Answers Grounded

We added roles to make answers feel natural. If the location is a Restaurant, someone might be the Head Chef or the Host. If it is an Airplane, you might be a Flight Attendant or a Passenger. It gives you a safe angle to answer without blurting out the location, and it gives the Spy a style to mirror.

The Location List Stays Visible

Everyone can see the location list during the round. Spies use it to narrow things down. Agents use it to keep questions broad and avoid giving away the place.

Voting Is Player-Driven

There is no auto-vote. Someone has to start it. When that happens:

  • The timer pauses.
  • The player who started it becomes the accuser.
  • If the vote is unanimous, the round ends immediately.
  • If it is not unanimous, the round resumes and the timer continues.

Final Accusation When Time Runs Out

When the timer hits zero, you do not just stop. The game runs a final accusation round:

  • Each player gets one chance to accuse.
  • Everyone except the accused votes.
  • Any unanimous vote ends the game.
  • If no unanimous vote happens after everyone has accused, the Spy wins.

Spy Reveal and Guess

Spies can also make a direct guess. Before time runs out, a Spy can reveal and name the location. A correct guess wins instantly. A wrong guess gives the round to the agents.

Host Controls

You can tune Spyfall to your group:

  • Change the round timer.
  • Set how many Spies are in play.
  • Pick which locations are in the pool.

We also rotate locations across games so the same one does not repeat back-to-back in the same room.

Quick Tips

For Agents

  • Answer in character, but do not drop unique details.
  • Ask questions that force a real point of view.
  • Start a vote only when the group is aligned.

For the Spy

  • Use the location list to triangulate the setting.
  • Ask questions that fit many locations.
  • If you are confident, reveal and guess before the timer ends.
